Summer Camp at Sherbrooke (Aug 2010)

This year we held our summer camp at Sherbrooke campsite, Nottinghamshire: 5 days of exciting activities, scouting skills and a big day out to the Robin Hood Festival.

Camping in Patrols, the Scouts spent much of the week tending to their fires, whether gathering and preparing firewood, cooking on them - or just poking them with a stick. They had the opportunity to learn how to use axes and saws, light fires and cook meals ranging from full English breakfasts to three course dinners. The Troop also used 'scout engineering' skills to build an impressive campsite gateway using nothing but pioneering poles and rope.

Scouts challenged their personal limits during the on-site activities. Artificial tunnelling tested their nerves in complete darkness through twisting passages. Archery demanded steady posture and a keen eye to reach the high scores. Climbing and abseiling both pushed many Scouts to successfully overcome their fears of heights, and to place trust in their fellow Scouts responsible for lowering them from the wall safely.

Our day out was spent at the Robin Hood Festival, a week-long event located in the depths of Sherwood Forest. There were myriad period re-enactments, displays from performers like fire jugglers, and a fairground, set against a backdrop of ancient trees.

Overall, an intense few days. The Scouts put in great effort during the activities and in keeping the camp running so smoothly - one of the most efficient Troop camps ever. Many thanks to Julie and Dean, and Explorers Peter and Peter, for coming along to help run the camp.

N.b. Scouts and Parents - there are many more photos than those uploaded here. We're hoping to make them available on CD in September.
