Cubs Pictures: Chess Competition

Chess Competition (Mar 2010)

Over the past 2 months, the Cubs have been practicing for the Ridgeway District Chess competition. 10 Cubs from the Pack entered for selection, who were whittled down to 6, who were then coached on this ancient game. All 6 cubs worked towards their hobbies badge at the same time.

After 5 weeks of practicing, they challenged the waiters from the Maharajah Indian Restaurant in Purton, to a match! Khalique the restaurant owner gave the Cubs a tasty snack to help with their concentration! Although the Cubs lost this match we have to remember the average age was nine versus 20+yrs. The final four were then picked; Michael (Captain), James, Ross and Ben (steady Eddy!)

On Saturday 6th March, they anxiously arrived for the District Tournament, trying to remember all the moves they had learnt. It was a nail biting time for their team coach, but at the last game, they learnt that they had won first place, What a great reward for all their hard work, even though we remembered, it's the taking part and team work that counts!
